[TUTORIAL] Dedicated server on linux PDF (03-09-2008)

Post by BLaHiTiS » 30 Sep 2006 09:35

Here, you can find the (18+ page) dedicated server linux tutorial in pdf. (it would be to vast to create in forum post). For TrackMania Forever, there's an addendum which will teach you to manually update your dedicated server configuration files to the updated version. The addendum also contains explanation for new and changed configuration features.

NOTE: A start package with the current tmu-f server will be also added in the future, for now, just replace the binary (TrackmaniaServer) from the current start package with the one you find in this topic. and read the tutorial + addendum.

 TrackMania Forever addendum : http://www.cosmicdreamer.be/ds/TmDedica ... 9_2008.pdf

03-09-2008: Addendum, third print
* Updated the document with the latest useful info from the changelog of version 2008-08-05 + Xymph reviewed grammer & spelling (thx)

27-05-2008: Addendum, second print.
Added quite a bit of new info and corrected bad function documentation. Also added a few missing new configuration options. Also some interesting new information has been added regarding the TMF dedicated server's handling of environments.

21-05-2008: Addendum, first print.
-----------------------------------------------
07-05-2008: twelveth print
* Just marked some info for classical servers in grey text so it will be more clear.

14-09-2007: eleventh print bis
* Correction of possibly misleading typos in certain tips.

07-08-2007: tenth print
* A few missing value descriptions from the config file have been documented properly now and i've also added the site to add your own TMU server key. Also the document is now slightly tidied up.

06-08-2007: ninth print
* A convenient latest repack of the 02-23-07 server + tutorial that includes a description of a new dedicated.cfg value (auto save replay setting).

21-12-2006: eighth print
* Because there is a new dedicated server, (2006-12-21), I repacked it for the tutorial and changed the links in the document.

20-12-2006: seventh print
* Various refinements of explanations about the difference between the trackmania legacy server and the server for tmu
* new downloads: slig's rpc utilities for trackmania united and legacy rpc utillities legacy to work with the "old" trackmania server that doesn't support united.
* Also downloadable is my repack of the dedicated server for trackmania united that i did to be consistent with this tutorial.

11-10-2006: fifth print:
* Added chapter 5.1, managing your playlist locally and remotely with the help of tmmm

06-10-2006: fourth print:
* Modified the configuration file examples to identify when you can use repeatable structures to add maps, guests and blocked players... + added another description about what the ps command is in the linux environment.

05-10-2006: third print:
* Added some more background info about linux commands you have to use in this tutorial (kill, ps and linux compression of files)

04-10-2006: second print:
* major error interpretation by me in the blacklist and playlist corrected
* some rogue sections with different fonts corrected

03-10-2006: first print

I have a first draft ready, the only thing that has tho happen is that the hosting company I have , will assign my sombying dedicated server domain back to my control so I can put the needed files on there (i've documanted some files you can download from domains and I'm too lazy to alter it now).. I just hope this can be happening tomorrow or the day after and then i'm going to put it online.. as a test, if people understand it ..

I'm not 100% dedicated linux user myself but I know enough to run stuff I'm interested in...

The tutorial is goign to suppose that you use windows at home though... those who also work with linux at home could maybe contribute to add some chapters :P

BLaHiTiS, I just used your manual to setup a server on Debian. And It was a really good tutorial and reference guide.

"Goe bezig kerel!"

Edit: I just figured out you could be from Wallonië... So ehm, "Tu as fait super travail! Merci"

If you're worried about that, you can double the headcount: your manual is great and it hepled me tremendously (ages ago, but I forgot to say thank you back then  )!

The tutorial is great!
Just wondering - is there a tutorial for getting aseco/rasp/apache/php/mysql ... all setup in Linux?
I'm guessing I'm gonna have to browse all over these forums... :)

I'm a bit lost with the files I need to download.

If I download the 2006 version obviously it won't work for Trackmania Nations Forever.

Yet when I download the 2008 version there is no RunTrackmaniaServer.sh file to the run the server.

I get a permission denied when trying to start the server for the first time.. Anyone has some ideas for me?

Im using CentOS 5.x

I already chmodded the RunTrackmaniaNations.sh so that the user could execute it, but to no avail..

My system is a VPS, maybe a user allowance i have to make? You can beat me on that, but i dont now how to do that..
I tried starting it on root, but got the same error..

aight, i got it.. i chmodded it the wrong way.. Does anyone perhaps has a list of chmod keys that all the files need to have?

for the sh part 755 did the trick.

*edit...

It says ESCW that im hosting, but I'm looking for TM Nations Forever..
I followed the guide to the bone, and still ( also not after 2 hours ) it isn't showing up at the server pages..

Also, what abbreviation is there for the Netherlands? NED or NLD?
NATO guidelines say NLD since 4 years, but I'm not sure whether TM used NATO guides or some other list. :D
