How to make a mod, Getting started

Post by Acegikmo » 12 Jun 2006 11:14

How to make a mod
I guess you already have a program that can edit ".dds" files, and that you have "winrar" or "winzip".
Some of you out there might wonder how to make a mod, and here is the answer. :)
To make a mod, that doesn't replace the default textures, you open this folder:

C:\Program\TrackMania Nations ESWC\GameData\Skins\Stadium

When you've opened that folder, right-click and select "New folder".
Name it "mod" (without quotes).
double-click it so you are in this folder:

C:\Program\TrackMania Nations ESWC\GameData\Skins\Stadium\mod

Minimize that window, and open a new window.
Enter this folder:

C:\Program\TrackMania Nations ESWC\GameData\Stadium\Media\Texture

There you'll see a folder called "Image".
click it once, and press ctrl+c (copy).
now open the window you minimized.
Press ctrl+v (Paste).
Now I guess you have "Winrar" or "Winzip" installed.
Right-click the folder and select "Add to archive..."
Do not save as rar, select zip instead.
At "compression method", just select "Store".
press "Ok".
When "Winrar" is done creating the archive, you can rename it to the name you want your mod to have.
Whenever you want to change the textures in your mod, change the textures in:

C:\Program\TrackMania Nations ESWC\GameData\Skins\Stadium\mod\Image

When you're done changing, you'll not see the changes in the game, since the game reads the texture from the zip file. So drag the "Images" folder, into the zip file whenever you've updated the textures.

If you don't have winrar, download it here: http://www.rarlab.com/
Remember to remove the "read-only" setting from the files so you can edit them.

I hope it helped :)
Good luck with your mod

If you have photoshop, use that and download the DDS plugin.
Google "nvidia photoshop DDS plugin".
