Alpha channels

Post by onejive » 06 Apr 2009 10:28

This has allways been my weak spot on skins. Still cant make them exactly as I wanted.

When I edit some file that already has an alpha channel I can save the previous alpha. So my questions are:

1. Do all *.dds have the same bit alphas?

2. When I save the file do I need to save with 1bit alpha, explicit, or what?

Because sometimes the alpha channels get broken and gets a really bad finish.

What sort of skin are you talking about ? If it is about car skins, dds files must be in DXT5 format.

Im talking about car and track skins. When I edit a texture on photoshop I can save with a lot of different bit rate alphas... never know wich one should I use so I normaly go with explicit alpha.

This is becoming the worlds slowest "echo". :roflol:

As advised a LOOOONG time ago

viewtopic.php?f=27&t=16799

"The only part of the process that needs to have 256 colours, is the alpha channel image. As this is an 8bit image, that's all it can have, just 256 shades of black/grey/white are needed and used."

...and...

"...but be careful with the alpha channel image. If you use alpha images that have less than 256 shades (16, and 2 colour are also possible), very odd things can begin to happen, and if you wish to remain sane, stick rigidly to black/grey/white 256 shades, and everything works fine."

It really doesn't mattter which app choice people use, the information is the same when dealing with alpha channels : 8bit, 256 colours, black and white. If you decide to go your own way and use either : 1bit, (2 colour) or 4 bit (16 colour)...you've only yourself to blame.
