Animated Skin

Post by _PaRaDoX_ » 06 Oct 2008 20:41

Is it possible to include a .bik file instead of .dds for a car's 'diffuse', effectively creating something that looks like active camouflage during gameplay?

'Coz that would be awesome.

A man of many words.

Cause the game doesn't allow .bik files on car skins. That's all, and nothing to say more.

Try it yourself if you want to make our answers doubty.

More than just because the game won't do it, there is a performance issue.
In order to get the most out of GPU performance there would have to be a mipmap for every frame of the animation. ImageThat is not supported in BIK files as far as I know. It would make even a small animation much larger and the rendering would be clunky as distances change. A flat animated sighn is one thing but a amination over a complex 3D model that is another thing entirely.
Right now most video cards get a big frame rate boost if you turn off Opponents vehicles( "o" key). Now just imagine the network load with everyone's car's skin files going up by a factor of 4.
Just not worth it in my opinion. But it would look cool and could be implemented but for performance reasons i suspect is not.

OK. I actually tried it, and it came up with an error message about mipmaps. Yeah. Sorry for the waste of thread.
