Damn Server....

Post by Freddie » 10 Jul 2008 02:13

Dear TM Community,

For the past 2 months my friend(DJarrett) and I have spent countless hours trying to fix his server problems. His server will almost always put everyone invalid at 8-10 people. He's even gone out and bought a brand new $2000 computer to try and fix this issue. We thought we had it fixed because we got up to 13 people, but today at 8 people everyone went invalid.

Here are his computer specs...

a Dell XPS 630i with:
1 223-5578 XPS 630, Intel Core2 processorQ6600 (2.40Ghz,1066FSB) w/Quad Core Technology and 8MB cache $1249
1 311-8296 4GB DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz
1 320-6315 No Monitor
1 320-6289 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
1 341-6286 500GB NCQ SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM) w/ 16MB DataBurst Cache
1 420-7975 Microsoft Windows XP Pro,ENG
1 330-0283 Dell Resource DVD with Application Backup
1 313-6082 48X Combo and 16X DVD+/-RW
1 420-7205 Power DVD 7.0 $0.00
1 420-7206 6 Channel,Dolby,PDVD,7.0

CPU is running at 5%
memory commit charge 842/5209

And my internet speed is
Image
with one server running

A few people in game said TMF takes up a lot of Bandwidth, but it should not take up to the point where we were able to host a server with 50 people in the old nations and come here to Forever, and barely make 8.

If ANYONE can help us out, it will be greatly appreciated.

wow, thats too bad, i am sorry to hear that. I don't know the answer to this but i will pose the question. Would it have anything to do with isp "p2p traffic shaping?" And is there any difference between the way tmnf handles its network traffic and the way tmn eswc handles the network traffic? cause i know from talking with you guys and from personal experience on the old FNR server, it worked without any issues in tmn.

almost sounds as if your isp is meddling or so.
if it's always the same number of people, maybe your isp gets suspicious if it sees 8 people connecting to you all to the same port (eg, suspecting p2p traffic), and then starts throttling, or even worse measures...

at the very least, this doesn't sound like a pc/server program error...

Maybe Race but then wouldn't people go invalid back in the old Nations too?

probably, unless something changed to trigger it.
the strange thing is that it's happening on 2 totally different pc's with your friend, the only things in common is are connection and the program. and the program doesn't do stuff like that with other people, so it almost has to be something with the connection

try lookin in the dedicated config file and set your download and upload rates to what you're getting - this will hopefully solve the problem

Try to disable server p2p, tune server down/up rates, and also on a multicore windows try that :
Windows users: if you have invalid time problems, try this (thanks to TrabTowN and eyez) :
- open taskmanager
- go to the "Processes" tab
- right click on the server app
- set priority to "Above Normal"
- set affinity -> deselect all but one core (if multi core)

yeah, the connection speed is more than enough. i run a server from time to time on a far worse connection, and have had more than 10 people on it. it would get laggy, but not make everyone go invalid all of a sudden...
i'm just afraid your ISP is throttling, or filtering or.... whatever they can do to reduce trafic/prevent clients from making servers.

You can download it here
Nations: http://files2.trackmaniaforever.com/TmN ... _Setup.exe
United: http://files2.trackmaniaforever.com/TmU ... _Setup.exe
And I also installed this.
This dedicated is for TM Forever only ! both TM United Forever and TM Nations Forever
(for old TMO/TMS/TMN dedicated, go THERE)

TM Forever dedicated server 2008-07-18 beta (linux and windows):
TrackmaniaServer_2008-07-18.zip (Nadeo)
and I was able to have 12 ppl in server at same time with no errors or invalids, I don't know if these really helped, cause I had not had more than 12 ppl at the same time yet. but hey I got 4 more ppl than I could have before.

this seems to show me that its nadeo not me

At least set in config an upload rate lower than the real expected rate (available for the dedicated!), at least 10% less, better 20% less, it will give chances to avoid having the server trying to send more data than possible, which with udp mean losing packets and so probably have invalids times.

433kbps upload is not so much, i really doubt that you had 50 players, even in timeattack....
The usable limit is more probably about 8-10 in rounds based mode, and 10-16 in timeattack. But perhaps that with correctly tuned rates it can be more.

Well the screenshot says 433 kb/s not 433kbps (=54kb/s). Should make a different.
